“I've started this blog… [as] a New Year's resolution to see how close I could get to [reprising] at least one photograph per day for 2011. … I hope you enjoy some of my blasts from the past.”

My son, Cole, has completed the design of my website so, as of today, this blog and onenewphotographperday.blogspot.com will be updated at that site.

Thanks for your continued interest and support.

Old Photo #201 – Summer Storm Cloud

Our place in the city did not allow for easy access to views of the horizon – save up or down the street itself. This cloud formation began building as I was working upstairs. I photographed it through the open bathroom window.

Old Photo #199 – Three Views of Jill

Yesterday evening at 6:26 p.m. my beautiful first child, Kathryn Jill Peters, gave birth to her first child, a 7 lb. 1 oz. boy named Leo. The exultant father, Lee, called with the news about 45 minutes after the birth to relay the news.

Leo is named after Jill's maternal grandfather, Leonard Pelser, whose birthday it yesterday, who has been featured on this blog, and who passed away a couple of years ago. Her Gramps was a most important person in Jill's life.

We are so thrilled for Jill & Lee, and so blessed at the safe and healthy arrival of another grandchild.

Jill mugging with her Gramps.Jill loved our time in Tinker Creek. She dreamed much in the fields north of the house. She has more to dream about today.

July 14 – The Bubble of LIfe

It's a cliché, of course, but the fleeting and ephemeral nature of life is a constant source of musing for me. David Langdon, alias Hubert the Clown, sees it everyday in his work at Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg. I will never forget the hysterical peals of laughter that erupted from little Dre as Hubert's bubbles wafted from the wand and over his head. David's a gifted and lucky man to bring such joy to unlucky children.

July 11 – Ruth out with Dooders

Dooders was Judee, the Yorkshire Terrier with arfitude, as Ruth called it. At the time of this photo in April 2006, Judee was about 14 years old and starting to show some signs of her age. While she still liked a good ramble in the brambles, increasingly her walks turned into rides.

July 10 – Massive Canvas & Baby Grand

A number of years ago, Winnipeg painter Bette Woodland and I made a very satisfactory swap: one painting for a selection of my photos as reference material for her pastoral paintings.

We're still looking for a wall of sufficient size to showcase this huge canvas in our new home.

July 9 – Entering Halfway OR

The town of Halfway is situated in Pine Valley, about eight miles due west of the
Woodhead Campground at Brownlee Dam in Devil's Canyon. How did the town get
its name? Visit http://town.half.com/learn.htm to find the answer. The home page of the website
says the population of 345 “consists of hard-working, self-sufficient folks... is a tight-knit
community, full of tradition and camaraderie.” The town changed its official name to half.com in
2000 in exchange for cash and computers.

July 7 – Horse, Lolo Pass MT

Across the road from yesterday's post was the ghostly, white-faced horse in the hoarfrosted meadow.

July 6 – Sunrise, Lolo Pass MT

It was a brisk morning as I pulled out of Missoula MT on this particular morning. As I turned off Hwy. 93 onto Lolo Creek Road, I was greeted by a sight a colourful as the sunrise I'd witnessed as I exited the city. A bright, large swath of red coated the opposing lane and signalled the end of another deer, legs akimbo in the ditch.

A couple of miles down the road, I pulled into a picnic area to take a few more pictures and add a few more layers of clothing to ward off the freezing temperatures. A Harley rider pulled in moments later wearing only a sleeveless T-shirt. I mentioned the deer kill and he promptly told me about his three collisions involving said species – the last of which, in Canada, put him on death's doorstep for some time.

None of the preceding has anything to do with today's photo other than it was part of the immediate journey which led me to this second sunrise at the entrance to Lolo Pass and approximately 77 miles of beautifully twisty riding.

July 4 – Tipi, Red Lodge MT

While I struggle with what my position on the Aboriginal question is and/or should be, I found solidarity with the plight of the Indian nation in "Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee" and a miniature book, "Native American Wisdom" by Running Press and Edward S. Curtis. Who better than Curtis to capture not only their likenesses, but also their words.

July 3 – GODNO 1

Miles City, MT. Early morning.

And what, exactly, could this car owner be wanting to communicate?

June 30 – Evergreen Boughs, Shadehill Dam SD

July 2005 was obviously a time of vibrant growth in this area. Torrential rains had soaked much of the prairies in the spring and early summer. The trees, if not agriculture, were benefiting mightily.

June 29 – Ghost Rider, West of Ellendale ND 7/05

I stopped at a typical prairie intersection a few miles west of Ellendale back on my ZAMM ride in July 2005 and did a series of shots to create a 360º panorama. This Shod Joe stepped out of a fallowed field – twice, once with his back to the camera and, then, face-on.

June 28 – Yesterday's Play, Today's Zombie Womb

July 8, 2005. Oakes ND. A beautiful morning in a small prairie town – home, by the way, to The Angry Beaver; certainly one of the strangest restaurant names I've ever encountered.

After an early morning photo shoot, I passed this scene on the way back to the motel. I do hope that Farmall gets a workout from the young resident from time to time.

June 27 – Thistle

In the next couple of days, I will be out with the chemical gun to annihilate this fellow and his like – in particular, the much-hated Musk Thistle (which Agriculture Canada obliges me to eradicate).

June 25 – Ferns & Redwood Triptych

I think this may be the first and only photographic agglomeration I've attempted.

June 23 – Clouds East of Missoula MT 3

I was talking, this morning, with a previous associate and collaborator about the joys of bicycling. And while I still recall the thrill of peddling my ass all over the country – and the ensuing high, I confess that the BMW would get a ride over the Colnago if tomorrow were a day where that was an option.

Meanwhile, I look forward to seeing the clouds of Montana again in about 9 weeks.

June 22 – Anne & Len Pelser

For reasons I haven't yet quite deciphered, in-laws have been more frequent subjects than my own family. My first in-laws were these fine folk. Holiday family gatherings were almost invariably an opportunity for good-naturing ribbing and humour.

Anne may have been laughing at me here in response to my perennial Low German post-meal barb, translated as, "Well, you got lucky (with your cooking) again."

June 21 – Just Another Sunset, Sioux Narrows ON

Virtually every day on which the sky is not socked in, the end of the day provides those on Ruth's Ridge with an inspiring display of colour & texture as the sun dips toward the horizon. I am tempted to photograph each one and post it, but I have managed to resist thus far.

I happened on this sunset as I looked for an image for today's post. I simply didn't feel like looking further, because I was happy to realize (again) that some endings can be beautiful.

The sun and moon still shine on my beloved Dad.

And on my old home town.

Old Photo #168 – Forest Floor

I'm not sure what got me down on the forest floor, and I also left my memory of its location there when I got up.

Old Phoro #167 – Ice Shard, Sandy Hook MB

My time living in Sandy Hook and environs offered up much beauty, yet was as tumultuous as the weather on the lake. Early spring brought the sound of thousands of wind chimes, but the chimes were water-bound, not air-driven. As the thick slabs of ice broke up, they deposited myriads of tinkling icicles in the rolling waters. Those were moments near the Tao.

Old Photo #166 – Plum Coulee 14

Another visit to Mayor Wiebe's house. This shot reminds me of a Ralph Gibson image I admired decades ago. Of course, this image is now decades old as well.

Old Photo #164 – Plum Coulee 13

Mayor David Wiebe's yard, with Robins.

This yard holds some curious memories for me. Ken Wiebe was a friend (and, later, rock band co-member). The Plum Coulee ran through the reeds in the foreground of this photo, and it's here that another friend pushed me off the raft at the age of 12 or so. I was caught underneath the raft for some moments – and time of terror for a prairie boy who only experienced 3" of water every Saturday evening. (About 100' to the right of this image is where the son of one of my father's cousins drowned some years later.) It was in the tiny shed on the far right of this photo where I first had my first puff of a cigarette. Other experiences related to growing pains I will keep to myself.

Old Photo #158 – Post-Storm, Sandy Hook MB

The colour in this photo – including the 'halo' over the play structure, is as like the actual as I am capable of reproducing. After a sudden and vicious summer storm in '93.
